# Launch and manage a VPS in the BookMyHost panel

This guide covers the life of a server in the BookMyHost panel: ordering it, logging in, power controls, the console, snapshots, resizing, reinstalling and cancelling.

## Order a server

Open Services, choose New server, and pick a plan, an operating system and a billing term. Hourly billing has a minimum of 1 hour per server; monthly and longer terms cost less per hour (see hourly vs monthly billing). The wallet must cover the order. The server is usually running under a minute after payment, and its IP address and login appear on the server page.

## The server page

Each server has tabs for Overview, Usage, Transfer, Console and access, Snapshots, Reinstall, Activity and Billing. Overview shows the live state, server details and network settings. Usage shows CPU, memory, network and disk charts. Activity lists every action taken on the server.

## Power controls and console

The bar at the top of the server page has Power on, Power off and Reboot. Open console opens a browser console in a new tab, which works even when the network or the firewall inside the server is misconfigured; the server must be running for the console to connect.

- Reset password sets a new root or Administrator password and shows it once, so copy it then.
- Some templates do not support password reset. For those, open the console and change the password from inside the operating system.
- A server that is powered off keeps its disk and reserved IP, which are charged at ₹0.61 per hour or more on the smallest plan.

## Snapshots

The Snapshots tab takes point-in-time copies of the root disk. Name one if you like and press Take snapshot before risky changes. Restore rolls the disk back to that snapshot, loses everything written since and restarts the server. Delete removes a snapshot you no longer need. A snapshot is not an off-server backup, so keep your own copies of important data.

## Resize a server

The Billing tab has Change plan. An upgrade is charged as a prorated invoice from your wallet and a downgrade credits the difference. The server restarts to apply the new size, and when the disk grows you choose whether the system partition is extended into the extra space.

## Reinstall the operating system

The Reinstall tab rebuilds the root disk from a template. All data on the root disk is erased, and the IP address stays the same. A new password is shown once when the rebuild finishes. Take a snapshot or copy your data first.

## Cancel

The Billing tab offers Cancel at period end, which lets the paid term run out. Terminate now destroys the server and its data permanently, and the page shows what you keep or pay before you confirm.

## FAQ

- **How do I log in to my new server?** The server page shows the IP address and login details. Use SSH for Linux and Remote Desktop for Windows, or open the browser console from the page.
- **I lost my root password. What can I do?** Use Reset password on the server page. If your template does not support it, open the console and change the password from inside the system.
- **Does reinstalling keep my data?** No. Reinstalling erases the root disk and rebuilds it from the template you choose. The IP address stays the same.
- **Does a snapshot restart my server?** Taking a snapshot does not. Restoring one rolls the disk back and restarts the server.
- **Am I billed while a server is powered off?** Compute stops, but the disk and the reserved IP are still charged at a reduced hourly rate until you terminate the server.
- **Can I change the size later?** Yes. Use Change plan on the Billing tab. Upgrades are prorated and downgrades are credited; the server restarts.
